OPPD Refrigerator Art Project

The Omaha Summer Arts Festival is pleased to welcome Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) to this year’s ArtSeen program. As part of its “Green Themed” refrigerator recycling/public art project, OPPD will display a recycled refrigerator art piece and offer the public a chance to create magnets for display on a second refrigerator.

OPPD has commissioned five artists to decorate refrigerators as public art, similar to the popular J. Doe public art project that was presented in Omaha in 2001. The goal of the project is to increase awareness of energy efficiency and recycling. The refrigerator art will be displayed this summer in OPPD service areas

Octopuses Garden Alliance's 'Tattooed Octopus'

Octopuses Garden Art Alliance received a grant from the Omaha Venture Group in 2009 to create a public art piece to highlight the mission of the organization. The sculpture would also be created in a manner that would embody the focus of serving and integrating Omaha through art. The creation of the sculpture began by local artist and founding member of Octopuses Garden, Peter A. Lochren. He shared a vision and began designing, forming and sculpting with the assistance of local artist, Mark Sundell. Through a progression of stages, including rebar, foam application, carving and a hardening polymer, the sculpture began to take shape. An all ages drawing workshop was then held, courtesy of ENCOR's South Industrial Training Center. Finishing the project, volunteers from Octopuses Garden adorned the base of the sculpture with donated sand, shells, starfish, and sand-dollars. They then built and filled flower boxes with live plants to surround the base. Local artist, Ed Fennel created custom hand-blown, "glowing” glass eyes which adds to the surreal appearance and makes the sculpture literally come to life.

In honor of all who have supported the Octopuses Garden Art Alliance and participated in making the sculpture project possible, the seven foot by 12 foot “Tattooed Octopus” will be unveiled on Friday, June 10 at 6 p.m. at the Omaha Summer Arts Festival . The sculpture will be located near the Gene Leahy Mall Arch at 11th and Farnam Streets.

Revinylize Nebraska (AIGA Nebraska)

Revinylize Nebraska uses hands-on design crafts to encourage Nebraskans to think about how the environment is affected by the products we all use and recycle. Visitors to the Revinylize booth at the Omaha Summer Arts Festival will learn how to reuse billboard vinyl to create their own products, such as tote bags, purses and wallets. These 15-minute hands-on activities will show visitors the power of reusing a material before recycling it. By reusing the billboard material, we eliminate the need to waste even more energy through the recycling process. As a bonus, the eye-catching colors and patterns of advertising vinyl help create a fashionable and smart product that participants can be proud to take home and use.
