Omaha Musicians' Association Jazz All-Stars featuring Joe Genovesi

The Omaha Musician’s Union Jazz All-Stars will open the Festival with a selection of contemporary and classic jazz charts. This year’s set will spotlight tenor saxophonist Joe Genovesi. According to the Omaha World-Herald review of his CD Cool Smooth & Sassy, “Genovesi offers a marvelous, richly ornamented style that indicates he should be more widely known.”

Zac Harmon

Born and raised in the heart of Jackson, Mississippi, Zac Harmon is a true disciple of the music that emanated from the city’s historic Farish Street district, universally recognized as the home of such great blues legends like the late Elmore James. During the 50’s and 60’s Harmon hung out at his father’s pharmacy on Farish, the first African-American pharmacy in Jackson, soaking up the aura and sounds of the musician customers while developing his skills as a guitarist, organist and vocalist. Like many, he honed those skills while at church; he now reinterprets them into a testimonial to the blues that truly embodies the Mississippi blues sound.

Red Baraat

Led by drummer Sunny Jain, Red Baraat is the first and only dhol 'n' brass band in the States melding the infectious Punjabi rhythm bhangra with brass funk and expressing the human spirit through improvisation and a powerful live sound. Comprised of dhol (double-sided, barrel-shaped North Indian drum slung over one shoulder), percussion, drumset, sousaphone, and horns, the 9-piece NYC-based group delivers an explosive stage performance and presence that leaves audiences in awe.
