Detailed drawing of subject is created and transferred to 140# cold-pressed watercolor paper. White paper keeps image bright. Working top to bottom with soft to medium blocks and soft pencil pastels, I lay in base & medium colors. I contour image elements by blending pigment with stumps & tortillons. The blended colors now appear as soft, rich, velvet. Using hard pastel and black & white charcoal pencils sharpened to a fine point with a sandpaper pad I make quick strokes that add light & dark tones for elements needing depth from texture.
